Meet our Leadership Team
As CEO, Ramji oversees operations and technological development at Counsyl. He’s played an integral role in the creation of Counsyl’s highly-automated lab, as well as the company’s platform for patient and doctor communications. Before Counsyl, Ramji was a financial associate at Morgan Stanley. Ramji earned a B.S. in computer science and an M.S. in financial mathematics, both from Stanford University.
Dr. Eric Evans has been with Counsyl since its inception. He joined the founding team to blend his scientific research and knowledge with real-world patient and doctor experiences. Eric is an expert in next-generation sequencing, molecular diagnostics, and molecular genetics. His research has been published in scientific journals including Aging Cell, Reproductive Biology & Endocrinology, PLoS Pathogens, and Genetics in Medicine. At Counsyl he oversees the clinical laboratory, research and development. Eric is a certified High-Complexity Laboratory Director and Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist. Eric holds a Ph.D. in genetics from Stanford University. He was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Research Fellowship as well as a Stanford Graduate Fellowship.
Rishi’s focus is bringing together software with the human touch to make genetic screening a routine part of clinical care. His expertise is taking traditionally complex systems and making them simple, scalable and accessible. Prior to Counsyl, he cofounded Voltage Security, a cryptography and data security startup which was acquired by HP Enterprise (NYSE: HPE). As the head of Counsyl’s engineering and product development teams, he has built a platform for modern diagnostic lab services including on-demand genetic counseling, automated results delivery, clinical interpretation, medical billing and lab information management. Rishi holds a B.S. in computer science from Stanford University.
Dr. Goldberg leads Counsyl’s collaboration with the medical community, executes high-impact clinical studies, and helps educate patients and physicians on screening benefits. He is board-certified in obstetrics and gynecology, maternal-fetal medicine, and medical genetics, and is a founding fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics. He was previously the director of the Reproductive Genetics Unit at the University of California, San Francisco and subsequently co-director of the Prenatal Diagnosis Center at California Pacific Medical Center and partner at San Francisco Perinatal Associates. Dr. Goldberg has also served as president of the Perinatal Quality Foundation and on the board of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine. He has published extensively in the area of prenatal diagnosis and has served on committees that establish national policy in obstetrical care.
Joel Jung joins Counsyl with nearly 20 years of experience as an executive in the life sciences industry. Most recently, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer of BioNano Genomics, a privately held company that is developing a new genomic mapping platform. Prior to BioNano, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of AgraQuest, a privately held biotechnology company, where he played an integral role in the company’s acquisition by Bayer in 2012. Before AgraQuest, Joel was the Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer for the Celera Corporation where he led the financial team in the spinout from the Applera Corporation, listing the company as an independent, publicly traded company. Joel’s experience also includes working at Chiron Corporation for 11 years in several executive financial positions. He began his finance career at Bank of America. Joel earned an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business and a B.S. from Purdue University.
John Tan is the Senior Vice President of Operations and is responsible for scaling and optimizing operations including quality, supply chain, IT and engineering. With more than 25 years of experience in managing global manufacturing operations, he most recently served as Vice President of Global Operations Engineering at Amazon. In that role, John was responsible for the engineering design and capital procurement of a multi-billion dollar group for Amazon’s worldwide fulfillment centers, fresh/pantry facilities and transportation logistics. Prior to Amazon, he served in senior operations roles at both Thermo Fisher and PerkinElmer, both in the U.S. and abroad.
Peter Soparkar joins Counsyl from Jazz Pharmaceuticals, where he led the legal team’s operations support and delivered on numerous debt and equity financings and four landmark transactions, including the launched tender-offer of Celator, the acquisitions of Italy-based Gentium, UK based EUSA Pharma, and the acquisition of and inversion into Ireland based Azur Pharma. Prior to Jazz, Peter worked at Latham & Watkins in London and San Francisco, with a practice spanning international and domestic markets, as well as private and public transactions. His deep life-sciences legal experience includes support for development activities, corporate governance, legal and regulatory compliance, public companies and compliant commercial activities. He received a J.D. from New York University and a B.A. from Oberlin College.
Counsyl has renamed its products effective July 19, 2017. The Family Prep Screen is now the Foresight Carrier Screen. The Informed Pregnancy Screen is now the Prelude Prenatal Screen. The Inherited Cancer Screen is now the Reliant Cancer Screen.
